As you may have guessed I have a full time job in the Corporate World working for a truly great staffing company. I enjoy my job, and one of the reasons I do is because I work with lots of fabulous people. People with personality, people who have big hearts, and just some really talented people. I have worked at this company for over 13 years and I expect that I will retire from there (if I don’t hit the lottery before then which isn’t likely). One of the things I love about this company is their amazing generosity. They give back. They give back a lot and they allow us to be part of that. So for those of you who would like to feel like you are giving back to the community you live in, or give to a cause that you know is actually getting your money, when researching places you would like to work, ask about this. Ask this one question, “As a company how do you engage with the community?”
I work for a company that allows us to do volunteer work, and they allow us to do it on company time. It’s a fabulous forum for those who really want to feel like they are doing something more in their life, but have little time to add any additional items to their already overcrowded schedules. We support Breast Cancer Awareness with months and months of fee generating activity and then hand that money over to the Race for the Cure team. We actively support the United Way, with 6 weeks of non-stop fund raising. We also support the March of Dimes with months of activity and a fund raising walk and we have been doing this since I have been there. We get involved with Haven, and have done projects for them. We adopt families for Christmas, and we have our own Kelly Fund to assist “Kelly Family” through hardships, such as natural disasters. Most recently I have joined Winning Futures, a program a co-worker had introduced me to. I am now officially a mentor to young girls who are trying to find their way to a successful career. The program started three weeks ago, and already I am so engaged, and so excited about it. To think that I may possibly have a positive influence on the lives of three young woman, well it brings me a lot of joy.
Today we talked about Attitude. Attitude is Everything, and if you think about it, it really is. With the right attitude we can get through anything. And today, I saw attitudes change right before my eyes. We have an energetic facilitator who practices what she preaches, who inspires, and rallies. I watch a room full of sleepy, disengaged girls, wake up and pay attention and I know the gals on our team got the message. What’s so great, is that not only do they leave the program energized, but I do as well. I go to work with a smile on my face, a spring in my step, and ready to take on another challenging day. So as much as I hope to inspire my mentees I know that I am being inspired as well, by them, by our facilitator, by the other mentors. An hour spent with this group of people, once a week, has changed me, it is making me a better person, a happier person. And really isn’t that what life is about being happy? If you want to do something really gratifying, volunteer for something. It can change your life.
The girls I mentor came up with our team name, TEAM STEP IT UP. I love it! The tag line, is “Keep stepping until you reach the top”. They then directed me to create the art work for our table sign. You can see I had to add shoes because well, what girl doesn’t love shoes and you have to have them in order to “keep stepping”. So hey…”Keep Stepping!”
